Who We Are
Newport Makerspace is a community workshop that is located in Maindee, Newport, South East Wales. The idea to set up a makerspace in the area emerged in 2018 from a group of individuals who lived either in the local area or in close proximity. Our group is a diverse mix of people from different backgrounds, of different ages and with different interests, but we hold a shared interest in the Maker Movement and in improving the local area of Maindee. We set up the charity Medrau Maindee Makers for this project and we are currently in the process of registering with the Charities Commission.
Medrau Maindee Makers is a bilingual name. The Welsh word Medrau was chosen as a representative translation of Makers, in recognition of the Welsh language and for alliterative purposes.
In 2021 we received grant funding through a partnership with Newport City Council Recycling Team. This funding was awarded by Welsh Government as part of the Green Recovery Circular Economy fund. This grant has been used to equip Newport Makerspace with tools and machines to help people support the local circular economy.
Medrau Maindee Makers works with a number of other local organisations and charities that share our ambition. The Reuse Centre in which we are located is a larger project by Wastesavers Charitable Trust. We have been supported by Maindee Unlimited since we started, who have provided us with meeting spaces, advice and funding to equip the makerspace.
