About the Metalwork Workshop
The makerspace has a variety of tools and machines for working metal that members can use for creative and constructive means. The metal workshop allows members to turn material on a gearhead lathe, or precisely cut and shape materials on a three-axis milling machine. A miniature furnace allows for casting, suitable for jewellery making and creating small parts. Tools and machines are also available for bending and cutting sheets of metal and we have an area with overhead extraction for activities that produce fumes. In the future we hope to support welding in this room. Why not join us on Tuesday evenings for Makers’ Night to learn more?
Your Safety
Making is fun and good for your soul, but often requires care to be taken for your own safety and for the safety of those around you. Small tools can leave you with cuts and injuries that may require professional medical treatment, and some machines could leave you with life-changing injuries or worse if they are not used in the way intended. You are responsible for your actions in the makerspace and you are required to follow all rules and guidelines when using the makerspace and its facilities. All machines require an induction with an appointed member before you can use them, regardless of the machine’s complexity or your prior experience. Reckless behaviour or a disregard for workshop policies will not be tolerated.
